On Nov. 18, the wizarding world of “Harry Potter” will expand to new storylines.
In the “Harry Potter” spin-off “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” fans can be sure to encounter countless new magical creatures and characters with whom to fall in love, all while feeling nostalgic about the original series.
In the first of five J.K. Rowling written films, fans will follow Newt Scamander’s adventures with his magical suitcase in 1920s New York City.
While the screenplay will be published as a book, Rowling’s original ideas for this series derived from a textbook mentioned in the “Harry Potter” series and later published in real life by Rowling herself. In the “Harry Potter” series, this textbook, written by Newt Scamander, explored the various creatures that he had encountered throughout his journeys.
The movie version of this book will follow his escapades with these creatures. The “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” book is a small delight in the “Harry Potter” franchise.
“I think that it’s really cool how J.K. Rowling used such a small detail from the Harry Potter series for these movies,” said freshman education and math major, Mack Morgan, a Quidditch player for the University of Maryland. “I’m excited to see what she does with it.”
Eddie Redmayne stars as Newt Scamander, the British magizoologist who carries magical creatures, such as a bowtruckle, in his suitcase. Upon arrival in New York City, Scamander’s suitcase is opened and he loses the creatures that he has hidden inside. As tensions between the normal humans (No-Majs) and wizards are already high throughout the city, it is important for Newt to locate all of his creatures before they wreak havoc in the city and make matters worse for the wizards.
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” follows Newt as he tries to collect his beasts with the help of friends Jacob Kowalski, played by Dan Folger, Porpentina Goldstein, played by Katherine Waterston, and her sister Queenie Goldstein, played by Alison Sudol. This quartet must find the beasts before Percival Graves, the Director of Magical Security in the United States, portrayed by Colin Farrell, catches Newt.
Under the direction of David Yates, who also directed the last four movies in the “Harry Potter” series, fans can expect to see glamorous 1920s period sets as well as the names of some familiar characters including Albus Dumbledore.
“I’m extremely excited to see how this movie plays off of what we already know about the wizarding world while moving into a world and story all of its own,” Sarah Elbaum, a freshman education major, said.
The “Harry Potter” series has accumulated a passionate fan base, giving “Fantastic Beasts” high standards. While most “Harry Potter” fans are excited for this new installment, some are still hesitant about expanding the world they already know.
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” hopes to delight fans and is sure to be full of action, magic and incredible creatures.
