Dec. 2

Head over to the West Lawn of the United States Capitol for the Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, an annual event to bring in the holiday season. Viewers gather at 5 p.m. for an evening of holiday festivities as the Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, lights the tree. Free.

Dec. 3-27

The Washington Ballet’s Nutcracker returns to DC’s Warner Theatre for its annual production, complete with swirling snowflakes, cherry blossoms and historic characters. Bring your ticket to the Sugar Plum Shoppe in the theatre’s lobby to receive a complimentary poster and start a new holiday tradition. $35+.

Dec. 5-6

Finish your holiday shopping early at the Smithsonian Holiday Festival, a two-day event filled with shopping, movies, music and book signings from 9-6 p.m. Volunteers will be on hand to wrap gifts purchased from the Air and Space, American History and Natural History Museum stores. Free.

Dec. 6

Break out your sneakers and your best holiday costume because the Jingle All the Way 5k is coming to town. Runners will race through D.C. for a day full of holiday cheer. Runners will warm up with complimentary hot beverages, a Mizuno gift card, a long sleeve shirt and jingle bells to add to your outfit. $40.

Dec. 8-9

Check out Kreativity Diversity Troupe for its annual end-of-semester performance. Hosted at the Clarice Smith School for Performing Arts, the show is written, directed, produced, performed and staged entirely by the group. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Free.

Dec. 12

Lace up your sneakers and dust off your ugliest sweater because the annual Ugly Sweater Run returns this December. Join thousands of runners and walkers at the National Harbor at 9 a.m. for a 5k complete with a complimentary knit hat, unlimited hot chocolate, one beer and the largest inflatable Santa D.C. has to offer. $40.

Dec. 14

The end of the semester is around the corner and there is no better way to celebrate than with some of this year’s hottest performers. Join 5 Seconds of Summer, Demi Lovato and ZEDD for Jingle Ball at the Verizon Center at 7 p.m. for their only night in D.C. $64.

Dec. 19

Check your Christmas list twice because thousands of Santas are coming to town. Forget about finals stress with the annual Santa Crawl, a Dupont Circle festivity guaranteed to bring you some holiday cheer.

Dec. 29

Jimmy Fallon fans unite: The Roots is coming to Maryland. For one night only, fans of Fallon’s official house band can experience the music Questlove and crew have made famous since the ‘80s. $65.
